Ruptela Device Center Not Detecting Your Tracker? How to Fix It

Charles Alexis

You need to change a setting on a Ruptela tracker, you plug it in, and the configuration software cannot see it. Here is how to get them talking.

What you are trying to do

Ruptela trackers are configured with Ruptela’s PC software, Device Center. You connect the tracker to a computer by cable, the software detects it, and you can read or write the configuration and update firmware.

When it does not detect the tracker, it is almost always the cable, drivers, power or port.

Step 1: the cable

  • Use a data cable. Many USB cables only carry power. If the cable came with a phone charger, it might not carry data. Use the proper Ruptela cable or a known data cable.
  • Check the connector. Make sure it is fully plugged into the tracker’s port.
  • Try a different USB port. Avoid USB hubs. Plug straight into the computer.

Step 2: drivers

Windows needs the right driver to talk to the tracker. If the driver is missing, Windows may show the device as unknown in Device Manager, or not show it at all.

Download the drivers from Ruptela’s support resources, install them, then unplug and reconnect the tracker.

Step 3: power

Some Ruptela devices need external power to connect for configuration, not just USB power. Check your model’s documentation. If it needs external power, connect it to a 12V supply while plugged in.

Step 4: the COM port

The tracker appears as a COM port. If another program is already using that port, Device Center cannot connect.

  • Close other tools that might be connected, such as other configurators or terminal programs.
  • In Device Manager, check which COM port the tracker is on.
  • If Device Center lets you choose a port, make sure it is the right one.

Step 5: software version

An old version of Device Center may not support newer devices or firmware. Download the latest version from Ruptela.

Step 6: configure remotely instead

If the tracker is fitted and online, you may not need a cable at all. Ruptela trackers can usually be configured remotely over the air through Ruptela’s tools or by SMS. This saves pulling trim off a fitted vehicle.

Tracker detected but will not write

If the software sees the tracker but changes will not save:

  • Check the tracker is not in a protected or locked state.
  • Check you have the right access or password.
  • Try reading the configuration first, then writing.

If the tracker is fitted and not reporting at all, see our guides to Ruptela trackers offline and Ruptela GPS trackers not working. If it reports location but not engine data, see Ruptela tracker not reading CAN data.

Using Ruptela with Traknova

Traknova integrates with Ruptela devices, so you can keep the hardware you trust and manage it from one dashboard alongside cameras and immobilisers.

See our Ruptela integration and GPS tracking pages.

Summary

Use a proper data cable, install the drivers, power the device if needed and free up the COM port. Or skip the cable and configure it over the air.
