Ruptela GPS Tracker Not Working: Common Causes and Fixes

Ruptela GPS Tracker Not Working: Common Causes and Fixes

Traknova

Ruptela devices are professional-grade GPS trackers built for commercial fleet use. They are reliable hardware, but when they stop working, the fault is almost always in the GPRS server configuration, the APN, or the device sleep state. Here is how to diagnose each one.

Traknova integrates with Ruptela hardware. See the Ruptela integration page for setup guides and supported models.

Supported Ruptela models

Common Ruptela devices used in UK fleets include:

  • HCV5: high-capacity commercial vehicle tracker with CAN support.
  • TCO4 RS: tachograph-connected device for HGV compliance.
  • Eco3: mid-range fleet tracker for light commercial vehicles.
  • FM-Eco4: compact tracker for cars and LCVs.

The troubleshooting steps below apply across all of these.

Step 1: Check the GPRS server configuration in Ruptela Config Tool

The Ruptela Config Tool is the Windows-based configuration software for all Ruptela devices. Connect the device via USB or Bluetooth and open the Config Tool.

Navigate to the GPRS/Server settings and check:

  • Server address: this must be the Traknova server hostname or IP. If the device has been used on another platform, the old server address will still be there.
  • Server port: Ruptela devices typically use a specific port per data protocol. Confirm this matches what Traknova expects for Ruptela hardware.
  • Protocol: confirm TCP is selected.

If the server address or port is wrong, the device is sending data to a server that will not process it, or to nowhere at all. Update the values, save the configuration, and restart the device.

Step 2: Check the APN

In the Config Tool, navigate to GPRS settings and check the APN field.

A blank or incorrect APN is one of the most common reasons a Ruptela device fails to send data. The device may have a SIM card with an active data plan, but without the correct APN it cannot establish a mobile data session.

Common UK APN settings:

  • EE: everywhere
  • Vodafone: web.vodafone.co.uk
  • Three: 3internet
  • O2: mobile.o2.co.uk

For IoT or fleet SIMs, use the APN provided by your SIM supplier. If you are not sure of the correct APN, contact your SIM provider.

Step 3: Check the SIM data plan

Even with the correct APN, a SIM that is not on an active data plan will not connect. Confirm with your SIM provider that:

  • The SIM is active.
  • A data plan is enabled.
  • The SIM has not hit a data cap or been suspended for non-payment.

Some IoT SIM providers allow you to check data usage and session history in a management portal. If the SIM shows no recent data sessions, the APN or data plan is the issue.

Step 4: Check whether the device is in sleep mode

Ruptela devices support sleep modes to reduce battery drain on parked vehicles. In sleep mode, the device reduces its reporting frequency or stops communicating entirely until a wake trigger fires.

In the Config Tool, check the power management or sleep settings:

  • If the device is in deep sleep, it will not send data until movement is detected or the ignition is switched on.
  • Check the motion sensitivity setting. If the threshold is too high, normal vehicle movement may not be enough to wake the device.
  • For testing, temporarily disable sleep mode, save the configuration, and restart the device to see if it comes online.

Step 5: Check the connection log in Config Tool

The Config Tool includes a connection or event log that shows recent communication attempts. Review this log to see:

  • Whether the device is attempting to connect to the server.
  • Whether connection attempts are failing or succeeding.
  • Any error codes that indicate the nature of the problem.

A log showing repeated failed connection attempts points to a server address or network issue. A log showing no connection attempts at all points to an APN or SIM issue.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Connect to Config Tool via USB.
  2. Verify server address and port in GPRS settings.
  3. Check and correct the APN.
  4. Confirm SIM is active with data plan.
  5. Check sleep mode settings and disable for testing.
  6. Review the connection log for error codes.
  7. Save configuration, restart device, monitor platform.

Ruptela on Traknova

Traknova’s GPS tracking platform integrates with Ruptela hardware for professional fleet tracking. See the Ruptela integration page for device-specific configuration guidance.

If the device is still not working after these steps, book a demo or contact Traknova support with the device IMEI and model number.
