
Dash Cam SD Card Errors: Why They Happen and How to Fix Them

An SD card error almost always shows up at the worst possible time, right after the one drive you needed on film.
The good news is that most of the time the fix is simple and cheap, and it does not mean your camera is broken. Here is what the error actually means, why it happens, and the order to work through the fixes.
What an SD card error actually means
Your dash cam writes video constantly, overwriting the oldest footage once the card fills up. This is called loop recording, and it is brutal on a memory card. When the card can no longer keep up, or the file system it uses gets corrupted, the camera throws an error and usually stops recording until you deal with it.
So the message is really telling you one of two things. Either the card has worn out or failed, or the way the card is set up no longer matches what the camera expects. Both are fixable.
The most common causes
In rough order of how often they are the culprit:
- A standard SD card that was never built for this. Ordinary memory cards are designed for occasional photos, not hours of continuous video writing in a hot car. They wear out fast. A regular card can fail in a dash cam within months.
- The card has reached the end of its life. Flash memory has a limited number of write cycles. Because a dash cam keeps the card almost full and constantly overwrites it, cards age far quicker than in normal use.
- The card is too big or too slow for the camera. Many cameras have a maximum supported capacity and a minimum write speed. Fit a card that is larger or slower than the camera can handle and you get intermittent errors, often when the card fills up.
- Heat. Cards sitting behind the windscreen in direct sun cook. Extreme temperatures corrupt data and shorten card life.
- The card was removed without powering the camera down. Pull a card mid-write and you can corrupt the file system. Always switch the camera off first.
- A corrupted file system. Sometimes the card is fine but the formatting has become confused, so the camera cannot read it.
- The camera itself is failing. Cheaper cameras are notorious for corrupting perfectly good cards over and over.
The fix, in order
Work through these in sequence and stop when the error clears.
- Format the card in the camera. Use the camera’s own format option in its settings menu, not just your computer. The camera sets up the folders and file system exactly how it wants them. This alone clears a large share of errors.
- If that fails, format on a computer, then in the camera. Format the card to FAT32 on your PC (most cameras want FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT), then put it back and format again in the camera. This resets a badly corrupted file system.
- Update the camera firmware. Some errors are firmware bugs, especially the ones that appear only when the card is full. Check the maker’s site or app for an update.

- Suspect the camera. If a brand new, correctly specified card also errors within days, the camera is corrupting cards and needs replacing.
When it is the camera, not the card
There is a simple test. Take the card the camera rejected and put it in your computer. If the computer reads it fine, and a new card also fails in the camera within a few days, the camera is the problem, not the card. This is common with budget cameras. People end up buying card after card, blaming the cards, when the camera has been the fault all along.
Stop it happening again
Once you have it working, keep it that way:
- Use a high endurance card rated for continuous video, never a standard card.
- Match the card to your camera’s supported capacity and speed. Bigger is not always better.

- Replace the card once a year if the camera is in daily use. Cards are cheap. Missing footage is not.
Across a fleet, this is a hidden risk
For one car, an SD card error is an annoyance. Across a fleet it is a real exposure. You cannot realistically check, format and replace cards in twenty or fifty vehicles on a schedule, and with local recording you usually find out a card failed only when you go looking for footage after an incident and there is nothing there.

Format it in the camera first, fall back to a FAT32 format on a computer, update firmware, then replace the card if needed.
