Jimi IoT Tracker Showing Offline: Diagnosis Guide

Traknova

A Jimi IoT device showing offline means the platform has stopped receiving data from it. Given that many Jimi IoT devices are battery-powered and designed for intermittent communication, offline status has a few more possible explanations than with always-on hardwired trackers. Here is how to diagnose it.

Traknova integrates with Jimi IoT hardware. See the Jimi IoT integration page for full setup documentation.

Step 1: Check the LED indicators

Jimi IoT devices have LED indicators that show the current operational state. The exact LED behaviour varies by model, but the general pattern is:

  • GPS LED (usually blue or green): flashes while searching for satellite signal; solid once a fix is acquired.
  • GSM/Network LED (usually red): flashes during network registration; solid or slow flash once connected to mobile network.
  • Combined status LED (on compact models): different flash patterns indicate GPS fix, network registration, and data transmission states.

If neither LED is active, the device may have no power or a fully discharged battery. For battery-powered models like the JM-LL01, check that the battery is charged. For wired models, check the power connection.

If the GPS LED is active but the GSM LED is not, the device has satellite signal but cannot register on the mobile network. This points to a SIM, APN, or network issue.

Step 2: Check the device report interval configuration

Jimi IoT devices have a configurable report interval. If the interval is set very high (for example, one update every 60 minutes or every 24 hours), the device will appear offline in platforms that have a shorter offline threshold.

The report interval is set via SMS command or through the configuration platform. The command format for setting the upload interval is typically:

TIMER,[interval in seconds]#

For real-time fleet tracking, set the interval to 30 to 120 seconds. For covert or asset tracking where battery life is prioritised, longer intervals are acceptable but the device will appear offline between updates.

Confirm the offline threshold in the Traknova platform against the device’s configured report interval. If the interval is longer than the platform’s offline timeout, the device will always show as offline even when it is working correctly.

Step 3: Verify GPRS registration

GPRS registration is the process by which the device connects to the mobile network and establishes a data session. If GPRS registration fails, the device cannot send data regardless of GPS or report interval settings.

Common causes of GPRS registration failure on Jimi IoT devices:

  • Incorrect APN: the APN must match the SIM provider. See the Jimi IoT tracker not updating guide for UK APN settings.
  • SIM not provisioned for data: the SIM may be voice-only or the data plan may not be activated.
  • No mobile signal in device location: if the device is in a location with no mobile coverage, GPRS cannot register.

To check GPRS status, send the status query command to the device via SMS. The exact command varies by model but is typically STATUS# or GPRS#. The device will reply with its current network registration state.

Step 4: Check the server address configuration

If the device is showing GPRS registered but still offline in the platform, the server address may be pointing to the wrong destination.

Send the server configuration command via SMS to update the IP address and port to Traknova’s platform settings. See the Jimi IoT integration page for the correct values.

Step 5: Wake the device from sleep

Battery-powered Jimi IoT devices enter deep sleep between reporting intervals. If the device is in sleep and the report interval is long, it will show as offline until the next scheduled wake.

Some models accept a wake-up command via SMS. Others wake only on motion or at scheduled intervals. If you need the device to report immediately, trigger movement of the asset it is attached to, or send a wake command if your model supports it.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Check LED status and confirm the device has power and network registration.
  2. Review the report interval setting via SMS command.
  3. Confirm the platform offline threshold matches the expected report interval.
  4. Check GPRS registration status via SMS status query.
  5. Verify the server address and port are correctly configured.
  6. Wake the device from sleep if needed.

Traknova and Jimi IoT

Traknova’s GPS tracking platform integrates with Jimi IoT devices. See the Jimi IoT integration page for configuration commands and setup guidance.

If the device is still offline after these steps, book a demo or contact Traknova support with the IMEI and we can check whether data is reaching the platform.
