Current AMAP rates at a glance
AMAP rates are set by HMRC. Always confirm current rates at gov.uk before submitting a claim. Figures are estimates only and subject to employer approval and HMRC rules. The fuel comparison uses pump/tariff prices you supply — actual costs will vary. Passenger payments apply to car and van journeys only.
Frequently asked questions
AMAP vs AER: what is the difference?
The Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) applies when an employee uses their own vehicle — a car, van, motorcycle or bicycle — for business travel. The rates are designed to cover fuel, wear and tear, insurance and other running costs. You can claim up to the AMAP rate tax-free; anything above that must be reported to HMRC.
The Advisory Electric Rate (AER) is different. It applies to employees who drive a company-owned fully electric vehicle and want to reimburse their employer for electricity used on private trips, or to claim back the cost of business charging. Because the vehicle belongs to the company, wear and tear is not part of the equation — only the energy cost is relevant.
In short: own car on a business trip — use AMAP. Company EV, recharging for business — use AER. Getting these mixed up is one of the most common payroll errors in fleet administration, and the difference matters especially now that the car/van AMAP rate has increased from 45p to 55p for the first 10,000 miles from 2026/27 onwards.
If you manage a mixed fleet — some drivers in company vehicles, others using their own — you will need both calculators. The links below will take you to the AER tool and the rest of our free fleet tools.
