Official mpg figures are optimistic. Real-world consumption is usually 10–20% higher. Pump prices change daily — check your local station for the current price. Default prices are based on HMRC advisory fuel rates and are for reference only.

How the calculation works

Fuel economy in the UK is measured in miles per gallon (mpg), but pumps dispense in litres. The conversion is 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 litres. So if you know your MPG and the price per litre, the cost per mile is simply the price per gallon divided by your MPG.

HMRC publishes advisory fuel rates each quarter as a guide for company car drivers to calculate fuel-only mileage payments. These are the defaults used here, but your actual pump price may be different so update it to get an accurate figure.

Real-world fuel economy is almost always lower than the manufacturer's official figure. A typical derating of 10–20% is common, particularly in urban driving, cold weather, or at motorway speeds above 70 mph. If you have a rough idea of your actual MPG from a previous fill-up, use that instead of the official figure.
