Figures are estimates based on benchmark tariffs. Actual costs vary by tariff, battery state, charging speed and driving style. Vehicle efficiency figures are rated/manufacturer values — real-world consumption is typically higher. Charging efficiency of 88% is applied to account for grid-to-battery losses. Always check your actual tariff before making decisions based on these figures.
Frequently asked questions
How the calculation works
The calculator starts from a vehicle's rated efficiency in miles per kWh and converts it to Wh per mile. It then applies multipliers for weather and driving style — cold weather increases consumption by around 25% compared to mild conditions, while city driving is more efficient than highway due to regenerative braking.
The adjusted consumption figure is used to calculate how much energy actually leaves the battery for the journey. That is then divided by a charging efficiency factor (88%) to account for the energy lost during the AC or DC charging process itself — the grid always supplies slightly more than what reaches the battery.
The home vs public comparison uses the same energy calculation but applies different unit tariffs. Home charging in the UK typically costs around 24-30p per kWh, while rapid public chargers often run between 65-85p per kWh, making the difference significant over longer journeys.
