Today’s thieves work quietly, in pairs, and are often gone in under a minute. For anyone running a fleet, that is not just an inconvenience. A stolen or off-road vehicle is one that stops earning, and the replacement, downtime and insurance fallout add up fast. The good news is that good security is not one clever gadget. It is a set of layers that each cover the others’ weak spots.
Here is how vehicles actually get stolen in 2026, and the practical ways to stop it.
Why vehicle security is harder in 2026
Modern cars are computers on wheels, and criminals have kept pace. Two methods dominate.
The first is the relay attack. Most keyless fobs are always broadcasting a short-range signal. Thieves take advantage of this by working in pairs: one holds an amplifier near your front door, close to where the keys usually sit, while the other holds a device against the vehicle. The signal gets relayed between them, the car thinks the key is next to it, and it unlocks and starts. The whole thing is silent.
The second is the OBD port attack. Every vehicle has an on-board diagnostics socket that garages use to read the car’s computer. A thief can plug a device into that same port to disable the alarm and immobiliser and program a blank key in seconds.
The lesson is simple. Factory security alone is no longer enough, and locking the doors is only the start.
Start with the fundamentals
Before spending anything, close the easy gaps. This advice is dull, but it removes most opportunist attempts.
- Park in well-lit areas with CCTV where you can, and use a garage or off-street spot overnight.
- Physically check the vehicle is locked. Signal jammers can block your fob so the car looks locked when it is not.
- Keep keys away from doors and windows, and store keyless fobs in a Faraday pouch that blocks the signal. This alone defeats most relay attacks.
- Mark valuable parts and fit protection for anything commonly targeted, such as catalytic converters on at-risk models.
None of this costs much. All of it makes your vehicles a harder, slower target, which is often enough to send a thief elsewhere.
Immobilisers: stop the vehicle being driven away
An immobiliser stops the engine from starting unless the correct key or code is present. Nearly every modern vehicle ships with a factory electrical immobiliser, but as the OBD attack shows, those can be bypassed. That is where aftermarket units earn their place.
Two types are worth knowing.
A ghost immobiliser is a hidden device with no key fob and no flashing LED to give it away. It works off a PIN sequence entered through buttons the car already has, such as the steering wheel or door controls. Until that sequence is entered, the engine will not start, so even a thief holding a perfectly cloned key gets nowhere.
A relay immobiliser cuts a circuit the vehicle needs to run and can be triggered remotely. If a vehicle is being taken, or a rental is not returned, you can immobilise it rather than waiting on recovery.

Tracking: always know where your vehicles are
