ULEZ Checker Says Not Compliant but Your Car Is? What to Do Next
Timi
You are sure your car meets the standard, but the ULEZ checker says it does not. Before you pay £12.50 a day, check whether the record is actually wrong.
The rules in short
The London ULEZ covers all London boroughs and runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. Cars, small vans and motorcycles that do not meet the standards pay a daily charge of £12.50.
The standards are based on the vehicle’s emissions rating, not just its age:
- Petrol cars and small vans: Euro 4. Generally most petrol cars registered from January 2006.
- Diesel cars and small vans: Euro 6. Generally most diesel cars registered from September 2015.
- Larger diesel vans: Euro 6, generally from September 2016.
Those dates are a guide only. Some older vehicles meet the standard, and a few newer ones registered just after the cut-off do not.
Why the checker might say no
The Euro standard is missing from the record
TfL relies on vehicle data from the DVLA and manufacturers. For some vehicles, the Euro standard was never recorded. With no proof of compliance, the checker treats the vehicle as non-compliant.
Imported or grey import vehicles
Imports often have incomplete emissions data on UK records, even if the vehicle meets the standard.
The vehicle has been modified or converted
Engine swaps, LPG conversions or retrofit kits can change emissions, but the record may not reflect that.
Registered just before or after a change
Vehicles built before a standard came in but registered later, or the other way round, can sit in a grey area.
Typo in the registration
It happens. Double check the reg, especially 0 vs O and 1 vs I.
How to check properly
- Run the reg through TfL’s official checker.
- Check your V5C. Some show the Euro status.
- Contact the manufacturer and ask for the Euro standard for your specific vehicle by VIN.
- Check with our ULEZ checker and vehicle check to see the data held on the vehicle.
How to get it corrected
If you believe the vehicle is compliant, you can ask TfL to review it. You will usually need evidence such as a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer showing the Euro standard. TfL’s website explains the current process.
Keep paying the charge while it is being reviewed if you drive in the zone. Penalty charges for non-payment are far more expensive than the daily charge.
Taxis and PCO vehicles
Licensed London taxis are treated differently under the ULEZ rules. Private hire vehicles are not exempt and must meet the standard or pay the charge. For PCO operators, a vehicle wrongly showing as non-compliant can cost a driver £12.50 every working day, so it is worth sorting out fast.
See our taxi and PHV page and our guide on PCO vehicle tracking for London operators.
Checking a whole fleet
Running regs one by one through a checker is slow for a fleet. Traknova pulls vehicle data for your whole fleet so you can see compliance, MOT and tax status in one place. See our fleet management page.
Summary
The ULEZ checker can be wrong when the Euro standard is missing from the vehicle’s record. Get a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer and ask TfL to review it, and keep paying in the meantime if you drive in the zone.
