Ruptela Tracker Not Reading CAN Data? Fix Missing Fuel and Mileage

Timi

A Ruptela tracker that shows location but no fuel level, odometer or engine data is not reading the vehicle’s CAN bus. Here is why.

What CAN data is

Modern vehicles share information on a network called the CAN bus. Trackers that can read it pick up data like fuel level, actual odometer reading, engine hours, RPM and fault codes. That data is far more accurate than estimates from GPS alone.

Ruptela trackers support CAN reading on many models, but it has to be wired, supported and configured correctly.

Step 1: is the tracker CAN capable?

Not every Ruptela model reads CAN. Check your model’s specification. Some need a separate CAN reader accessory.

Step 2: is it actually connected?

CAN data needs a physical connection to the vehicle’s CAN wires, either directly or through a contactless CAN reader that clips around the wires without cutting them.

  • Check the CAN wires are connected at both ends.
  • Check they are on the right wires. CAN high and CAN low swapped means no data.
  • For contactless readers, check they are clamped on the correct wires and seated properly.

If someone fitted the tracker for location only, CAN may never have been connected.

Step 3: does the vehicle share that data?

Not all vehicles broadcast all data on the CAN bus. Heavy goods vehicles often use the FMS standard, which gives fuel and odometer. Many cars and vans do not broadcast fuel level in a way trackers can read, or only some models do.

Check the vehicle is supported for the data you want. Ruptela and CAN reader suppliers publish supported vehicle lists.

Step 4: is the configuration right?

The tracker needs to be told to read CAN and which parameters to send.

  • Check CAN reading is enabled in the configuration.
  • Check the correct vehicle profile or program is selected, especially with contactless readers.
  • Check the parameters you want, like fuel level and odometer, are enabled for sending.

See our guide to Ruptela Device Center not detecting the tracker if you cannot connect to change settings.

Step 5: is the platform showing it?

Sometimes the tracker is sending the data but the platform is not displaying it. Check that the platform supports the parameters you are sending and that they are mapped correctly.

Mileage looks wrong

If you see mileage but it does not match the dashboard, the tracker may be using GPS distance instead of CAN odometer. See our guide to GPS tracker showing wrong mileage.

No hardware option

For some vehicles, you can get much of this data without fitting anything. Digital tracking pulls location, mileage and fuel or charge level straight from the vehicle’s built-in connectivity. It suits newer cars and vans where CAN wiring is fiddly.

You can see if your vehicles are supported on our digital fleet tracking page.

Using Ruptela with Traknova

Traknova integrates with Ruptela trackers and displays CAN data like fuel, odometer and engine hours alongside location. See our Ruptela integration page.

Summary

Check the model supports CAN, the wiring is right, the vehicle broadcasts the data and the configuration has it enabled. Missing CAN data is nearly always one of those four.
