MOT History Not Showing? Why a Vehicle's MOT Record Can Be Missing
Charles Alexis
You enter a registration to check MOT history and get nothing back, or fewer tests than you expected. Before assuming something is dodgy, check these common reasons.
Reason 1: the vehicle is too new
In Great Britain, cars and small vans usually need their first MOT when they are three years old. A newer vehicle simply has no MOT history yet. That is normal.
Check the first registration date. If it is under three years, there will be no MOT record.
Reason 2: typo in the registration
The most common reason. Double check the plate, especially:
- 0 (zero) vs O
- 1 vs I
- 5 vs S
- 8 vs B
Reason 3: the plate has changed
If a private plate has been added or removed, the MOT history follows the vehicle, not the plate. Search with the current registration. If you are buying a vehicle, ask the seller about any plate changes and check the V5C.
Reason 4: the vehicle was tested in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland runs its own vehicle testing through the DVA. If the vehicle was tested there, its history may not show in the same place as GB tests. Check the NI service if the vehicle has lived there.
Reason 5: an imported vehicle
A vehicle imported into the UK will only have UK MOT history from after it was registered here. Any testing abroad will not show.
Reason 6: an exempt vehicle
Some vehicles do not need an MOT, for example certain historic vehicles over 40 years old that meet the rules. They may have no recent tests.
Reason 7: very old records
Online MOT history goes back to around 2005. Tests before that will not appear.
Reason 8: the test has only just happened
A test carried out today should appear quickly, but occasionally there can be a short delay. Check again later.
Gaps in the history
If there is a gap of more than a year between tests, the vehicle may have been off the road and declared SORN, or it may have been driven without an MOT. When buying a used fleet vehicle, ask about any gaps and check tax history too.
Checking MOTs across a fleet
For one car, a quick check is fine. For a fleet, missing an MOT date can mean an uninsured vehicle on the road, fines and penalty points for the driver.
Use our free MOT history checker and vehicle check for single vehicles. For fleets, Traknova connects to DVSA MOT data and DVLA records, so you get automatic reminders before MOTs and tax expire across every vehicle. See our DVSA MOT integration and DVLA integration pages.
Summary
Missing MOT history is usually a new vehicle, a typo, a plate change, a Northern Ireland or imported vehicle, or a record from before 2005. Check those first before assuming anything is wrong.
