Key Not Detected on a Keyless Car? Quick Fixes to Get You Moving

Timi

“Key not detected” usually appears when you are already late. Here is how to get going, then fix it properly.

Get going now: the backup start

Almost every keyless car has a backup way to start with a weak or flat fob. Usually it is one of these:

  • Hold the fob directly against the start button and press it.
  • Put the fob in a specific slot or marked spot, often in the centre console or cup holder.
  • Hold the fob against a marked area on the steering column.

Check your handbook for the exact method. It is worth knowing before you need it.

Getting in with a dead fob

Most fobs have a hidden metal key inside. Slide the release and pull it out. The driver’s door often has a hidden lock under a cover on the handle.

The common causes

Weak fob battery

By far the most common cause. Fob batteries usually last a couple of years. Many use a CR2032 coin cell, but check yours. Replacing it takes a few minutes.

A warning like “key battery low” often shows a few weeks before it fails. Do not ignore it.

Interference

Keyless systems use radio signals. Phones, wireless chargers, laptops, other fobs and some aftermarket electronics can interfere. Move the fob away from other devices and try again.

Strong radio sources nearby, like some transmitters or petrol station equipment, can also interfere briefly.

Signal-blocking pouch

If you keep the fob in a Faraday pouch to stop relay theft, it will not work until you take it out. Easy to forget. See our guide to relay attack car theft.

Low car battery

A weak 12V battery can stop the car detecting the key properly, even if the dashboard lights up. If it keeps happening, test the battery.

Damaged fob

Dropped or wet fobs can fail. Try the spare. If the spare works, the main fob needs replacing or reprogramming.

Keyless function turned off

Some cars let you switch off keyless entry or go to sleep mode on the fob to protect against theft. Check the fob or car settings.

Quick checklist

  1. Use the backup start method.
  2. Take the fob out of any pouch or bag with other electronics.
  3. Replace the fob battery.
  4. Try the spare fob.
  5. Check the car battery.
  6. Get the fob checked by a dealer or auto locksmith.

If the immobiliser light is flashing

See our guide to immobiliser light flashing and car won’t start.

Keyless cars and theft

Keyless cars are convenient, but they are also targeted by relay theft. See our guide to keyless theft in fleets and steering wheel lock vs ghost immobiliser.

For rental fleets: phones instead of fobs

Rental and PCO fleets lose a lot of time to fob problems: flat batteries, lost fobs and handovers. Traknova’s keyless access lets drivers unlock supported vehicles from their phone, with access you can grant and remove remotely.

Summary

Use the backup start method, then replace the fob battery. Most “key not detected” messages are a weak battery or interference.
