Immobiliser Light Flashing and Car Won't Start? How to Fix It
Charles Alexis
A flashing key or car symbol on the dashboard and an engine that will not start usually means the car does not recognise the key.
First: is the flashing normal?
On many cars, a security light flashes slowly when the car is locked or switched off. That is normal and shows the immobiliser is armed.
The problem is when it keeps flashing, or flashes fast, when you try to start the car, and the engine will not run.
How the factory immobiliser works
Your key has a small chip called a transponder. When you turn the key or press start, the car reads the chip. If the code matches, the engine starts. If not, the immobiliser blocks it.
So a flashing immobiliser light usually means the car is not reading the key properly.
The common causes
Flat key battery
On keyless and push-button cars, a weak fob battery is the number one cause. Many fobs use a CR2032 coin cell, but check yours.
Quick fix: most cars let you start with a flat fob by holding it against the start button or putting it in a specific slot. Check your handbook.
Try the spare key
If the spare works, the problem is the main key, not the car. The key may be damaged, or the transponder chip may have come loose after a drop.
Low car battery
A weak 12V battery can stop the immobiliser system working properly, even if the dashboard lights up. If the engine cranks slowly or not at all, test or jump the battery.
Interference
Phones, chargers, other keys and some aftermarket electronics can interfere with the key signal. Remove other items from near the ignition and try again.
Steering lock
On some cars, the steering lock jams when the wheels are turned. Wiggle the wheel while turning the key or pressing start.
Aftermarket immobiliser armed
If the car has an aftermarket immobiliser, like a ghost immobiliser, it may be blocking the start. Disarm it properly first. See our guide to car won’t start after ghost immobiliser install.
Key not programmed
If you had a new key cut or the car had work done, the key may not be programmed to the car. It will open the doors but not start the engine. A dealer or auto locksmith can program it.
Quick checklist
- Try the spare key.
- Hold the fob against the start button or in the key slot.
- Replace the fob battery.
- Check the 12V battery.
- Remove other electronics near the ignition.
- Disarm any aftermarket immobiliser.
- Call an auto locksmith or dealer if none of that works.
Keyless cars and key not detected
If your dashboard says “key not detected”, see our guide to key not detected on keyless cars.
For fleets: lost keys are expensive
On a rental or PCO fleet, key problems mean downtime. Traknova’s keyless access lets drivers unlock and start supported vehicles with their phone, and our immobilisers can be managed remotely. Fewer physical keys means fewer key problems.
Summary
A flashing immobiliser light with no start means the car is not reading the key. Try the spare, check the fob and car batteries, and disarm any aftermarket immobiliser before calling for help.
