Howen Dash Cam or MDVR Offline? Step-by-Step Fixes for Fleets
Timi
Howen makes AI dash cams and mobile DVRs used across bus, coach, logistics and taxi fleets. When one goes offline, here is how to track down the cause.
What offline really tells you
Offline only means the platform has not heard from the device. The camera might be unpowered, unable to get signal, pointing at the wrong server or stuck restarting. Check the last reported location and time first. That often gives you a clue.
Step 1: power and ignition
- Check the unit’s indicator lights.
- Check fuses, earth and connections. Vibration on vans, buses and HGVs loosens connections over time.
- Check the ignition signal. Many units go into standby when ignition is off and only connect when it comes back on.
- Check the vehicle battery. Low voltage protection can shut the unit down.
See our guide to hardwire kits not working for wiring checks.
Step 2: SIM and data
- SIM seated properly and the right way round.
- SIM active, PIN disabled and with data left.
- APN set correctly for your SIM provider.
Video-heavy setups burn through data quickly, especially with multiple channels. Check usage against the plan.

Step 3: server and device settings
The unit needs the correct server address, port and device ID to reach the platform. If it was moved from another platform or reset, these may be wrong. Check against the details your platform provider gave you.
Step 4: storage
Mobile DVRs often use SD cards or a hard drive. A failed or full drive can cause reboot loops, which show up as the unit dropping on and offline. Check for storage errors in the unit’s status or menu.
Step 5: antennas
Many Howen units use external antennas for GPS and 4G. A loose or damaged antenna lead means poor or no connection. Check both are connected and not crushed behind trim.
Step 6: firmware
Ask your supplier whether there is a newer firmware version. Updates often fix connection and stability bugs.
Camera channels missing, unit online
If the unit is online but one camera channel shows no video, check that camera’s cable and connector. Long cable runs on buses and trucks are easily damaged. See our guide to dash cam rear camera not working for similar checks.
Using Howen with Traknova
Traknova integrates with Howen devices, so you can manage cameras alongside trackers and other hardware from one place. Offline devices show as alerts, so a dead camera does not go unnoticed for weeks.
