GPS Tracker Showing Ignition On When Engine Is Off? How to Fix It

Charles Alexis

If your tracker shows ignition on when the vehicle is parked and locked, your trip reports, idling data and alerts are all wrong. Here is how to fix it.

Why ignition status matters

Ignition status drives a lot of fleet data:

  • When trips start and end
  • Engine hours
  • Idling time
  • Out of hours use alerts
  • Sleep mode, which saves the vehicle battery

If it is wrong, all of that is wrong too.

How trackers detect ignition

Trackers work out ignition in a few different ways. Most let you choose which one to use:

  • Ignition wire: a wire connected to an ignition-switched feed. Simple and reliable if wired to the right place.
  • Voltage: the tracker watches battery voltage. When the engine runs, the alternator pushes voltage up, usually above around 13V. When it stops, voltage drops.
  • Movement: the tracker uses its accelerometer. If it is moving, it assumes the engine is on.
  • CAN data: the tracker reads engine status or RPM from the vehicle’s CAN bus.

On Teltonika devices this is the ignition source setting. Other brands have similar options.

Common causes and fixes

Ignition wire on the wrong feed

If the ignition wire is on a permanent live, the tracker always sees ignition on. If it is on a feed that stays live for a while after the car is turned off, it shows ignition on for a while after parking.

Fix: test the feed with a multimeter. It should drop to zero when the ignition is switched off. Move the wire if it does not.

Voltage thresholds set wrong

With voltage-based ignition, the threshold has to match the vehicle. Modern vehicles with smart charging systems do not always push voltage high when the engine runs. Some EVs and hybrids behave very differently.

Fix: adjust the thresholds, or switch to a different ignition source.

Movement sensitivity too high

With movement-based ignition, vibration from wind, passing lorries or someone closing a door can trigger “ignition on”.

Fix: lower the sensitivity, or combine movement with voltage.

No ignition wire connected

Some installs, especially OBD trackers, have no ignition wire at all. The tracker guesses from voltage or movement.

Fix: use CAN data if the tracker supports it, or adjust voltage settings.

Hybrids and EVs

Hybrids and EVs are a common cause of confusion. The engine might not run at all while the vehicle is “on”, and charging can raise voltage while parked. CAN data or digital tracking usually gives the most reliable status.

Our digital fleet tracking uses the vehicle’s own data, so ignition and charging status come straight from the car.

Knock-on effects

Getting ignition right often fixes other problems too:

Summary

Check which ignition source the tracker uses, then check the wiring or thresholds for that source. Most ignition problems are a wire on the wrong feed or voltage thresholds that do not match the vehicle.
