Forgot Your Ghost Immobiliser PIN or Lost the Fob? What to Do Next

Charles Alexis

Forgetting the PIN on a ghost immobiliser is more common than people admit. The good news is there is usually a way back in.

Do not try to bypass it

The whole point of a ghost immobiliser is that it is hard to get around. Pulling wires or fuses to “bypass” it can cause electrical faults, damage the system and may cause problems with your warranty or insurance. Work through the proper routes below.

Option 1: the emergency override code

Most ghost systems come with an emergency override code. It is usually on a card handed over at installation. Using it lets you start the car without your normal PIN.

Check:

  • The paperwork from the installer.
  • Any card in your wallet or the vehicle file.
  • Emails from the installer.

Once you are back in, set a new PIN using the process for your system.

Option 2: use another authorised method

Many systems can be disarmed in more than one way:

  • PIN
  • Fob or key tag
  • Phone app over Bluetooth

If you lost the fob but know the PIN, or forgot the PIN but have the app, use whatever you still have.

Option 3: contact the installer

If you have no emergency code, no fob and no PIN, the installer is the next step. They will normally need proof of ownership before helping, which is a good thing. Have your V5C and ID ready.

They can reset the system, set a new PIN and pair a new fob.

Lost fob: security first

If a fob was lost, not just misplaced, treat it as a security issue. Ask the installer to remove the lost fob from the system so it cannot be used. Then pair a replacement.

Changing the PIN

Once you are back in, set a PIN you will remember but that is not obvious. Avoid sequences like 1-2-3-4. Do not write it anywhere in the vehicle.

How to stop this happening

  • Keep the emergency code card somewhere safe, away from the vehicle.
  • Store PINs securely, for example in a password manager.
  • Change PINs when drivers leave.
  • Brief every driver properly when the system is fitted.

Fleets: PINs on paper do not scale

For a car rental or PCO fleet, managing PINs for every vehicle and every driver quickly becomes a mess. Drivers forget, PINs get shared, and someone has to drive out to help.

Traknova manages immobilisers remotely. You can arm and disarm vehicles from the dashboard, give drivers access only when they need it, and remove access when they return a vehicle. No PIN cards in drawers.

Summary

Use the emergency override code, or another authorised method like a fob or app. If you have none, contact the installer with proof of ownership. Do not try to bypass the system yourself.
