
Loop Recording Explained: Why Dash Cam Clips Get Overwritten

Loop recording is the feature that makes a dash cam practical, and also the reason footage seems to vanish. Once you understand it, most dash cam footage worries make sense.
Here is what loop recording actually does, why cameras work this way, and which parts of it you can control.
What loop recording is
Loop recording means the camera records continuously, and once the memory card is full it starts writing over the oldest footage to make room for new. The card never “runs out” and the camera never stops to ask you to clear it. It just keeps going, endlessly cycling through the card.
Think of it like a loop of tape that records over itself. The most recent stretch of driving is always there, while the oldest footage is steadily replaced.
Why cameras record in short clips
Rather than one enormous video file, a dash cam saves footage in short segments, often one, three, or five minutes each. There are good reasons for this:
- It makes overwriting simple. The camera can delete the oldest single clip and record a fresh one, rather than managing one giant file.
- It limits the damage from corruption. If one clip is corrupted, you lose a few minutes, not the whole day’s recording.
- It makes footage easier to find and share. You can pull the one short clip you need instead of a huge file.
You can usually set the segment length in the camera’s settings. Shorter segments are easier to handle, and most people leave this on the default.
What “overwriting” actually means
When the card is full, the camera looks for the oldest unprotected clip and records over it. The key word is unprotected. Ordinary loop footage is fair game and will be overwritten in time. Footage that has been locked or protected is set aside so the loop skips over it. That distinction is the whole game when it comes to keeping the footage you need.
What is protected from the loop
Most cameras protect clips in two ways. When the G-sensor detects an impact, the camera automatically locks the clip around that moment so the loop cannot wipe it. You can also lock a clip yourself with an emergency or lock button. Protected clips are moved to a separate folder and kept safe. The catch is that the protected area is not unlimited either. Once it fills, the camera may stop protecting new clips or start overwriting old protected ones, so it needs clearing out occasionally.
What you can control
Loop recording is not something you can switch off and still have a useful camera, but you can shape it:
- Card size. A bigger card holds more history before it loops, giving you more time to save a clip. Stay within your camera’s maximum supported size.
- Resolution and channels. Higher resolution and more cameras fill the card faster, so the loop comes around sooner. Recording 4K on two channels gives you far less history than 1080p on one.
- Segment length. Adjustable on most cameras, though the default is usually fine.

Why loop recording does not scale to a fleet
For one car, loop recording is a sensible design. The recent past is always on the card, and you protect anything important. Across a fleet, the same design becomes a liability. Footage on every vehicle is overwriting itself on a timer, and if nobody retrieves a specific clip before the loop reaches it, it is gone. After an incident there is often a delay before anyone pulls the card, and by then the evidence may have been overwritten.
