Teltonika GPS Tracker Not Connecting to Platform: How to Fix It

Traknova

Teltonika makes some of the most widely deployed GPS tracking hardware in the UK fleet market. Their FMB and FMC series are reliable devices, but when they fail to connect, the cause is almost always in the configuration rather than the hardware. Here is how to work through it.

Traknova integrates with the full Teltonika range. If you are using Teltonika hardware on the Traknova platform, see our Teltonika integration page for device-specific setup guidance.

Supported Teltonika models

Traknova supports the following Teltonika devices, among others:

  • FMB120, FMB125, FMB140 (hardwired, mid-range)
  • FMB920 (compact hardwired)
  • FMC130, FMC880 (with CAN/LVC support)

The troubleshooting steps below apply across all of these models.

Step 1: Check the server IP and port in Teltonika Configurator

This is the most common cause of a Teltonika device not connecting. The Configurator is Teltonika’s Windows-based configuration tool, available from their wiki. Connect the device via USB, open Configurator, and navigate to GPRS settings.

Check the following:

  • Domain: This should be the Traknova server address. If it still shows a previous platform’s IP or Teltonika’s demo server, the device is sending data nowhere useful.
  • Port: Confirm the port matches what Traknova expects for the Teltonika codec. Common ports are 5027 (Codec 8) or 5028 (Codec 8 Extended).
  • Protocol: Confirm TCP is selected, not UDP, unless specifically required.

Update the server settings, save the configuration, and restart the device.

Step 2: Check the APN settings

In the GPRS settings panel, the APN needs to match your SIM provider.

Common UK APN settings:

  • EE: everywhere
  • Vodafone: web.vodafone.co.uk
  • Three: 3internet
  • O2: mobile.o2.co.uk

For IoT or fleet SIMs from providers like Eseye or Arkessa, use the APN your provider gave you. If the APN field is blank, the device cannot connect to mobile data and will not reach the platform.

Step 3: Confirm the SIM has active data

An active SIM that has never been provisioned for data, or a SIM that has run out of data allowance, will show as connected to the network but will not transmit device data.

In Configurator, the GPRS Status indicator shows the connection state. If it shows no GPRS connection even after the device is outside with a mobile signal, the SIM is the issue. Contact your SIM provider to confirm the data plan is active.

Step 4: Check whether the device is in deep sleep

Teltonika FMB/FMC devices support deep sleep to protect vehicle batteries during extended parking. In deep sleep, the device does not send data and does not appear active on the platform.

In Configurator, check the Sleep Settings section. If deep sleep is enabled, the device will need a motion or ignition trigger to wake. Confirm the accelerometer is enabled and set to an appropriate sensitivity threshold.

If you need to test the device while it is stationary, temporarily disable deep sleep, save the configuration, and restart the device.

Step 5: Review the Records in Configurator

When connected via USB, Configurator shows the device’s record buffer: the data packets it has collected but not yet sent. If there are records accumulating, the device is working and has GPS fixes, but is not reaching the server. This confirms the issue is the data connection or server endpoint, not the GPS.

If there are no records, the device is not generating data at all, which may indicate a power issue or a GPS problem.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Connect device to Configurator via USB.
  2. Verify Domain and Port in GPRS settings match Traknova server configuration.
  3. Check and correct the APN.
  4. Confirm SIM is active with a data plan.
  5. Check Sleep Settings and disable deep sleep for testing.
  6. Review Records buffer to determine whether the device is generating data.
  7. Save configuration, restart device, and monitor platform for connection.
