OBD GPS Tracker Keeps Disconnecting: Causes and Fixes

Traknova

An OBD tracker that keeps going offline is a common complaint, and the cause is almost always one of the same handful of issues. OBD devices are convenient but they have specific quirks around power and connection stability that hardwired devices do not share.

OBD port loses power when the ignition is off

The most frequent cause of intermittent OBD tracker disconnection is a vehicle where the OBD port cuts power when the ignition is switched off. In this scenario, the device is not experiencing a fault. It is simply losing power.

When the ignition comes back on, the device reboots, reacquires GPS signal, and reconnects to the network. In the platform this looks like the device going offline every time the vehicle is parked, and coming back online a minute or two after the engine starts.

To check whether this is your issue: measure voltage at the OBD port with the ignition off. If voltage is zero, the port is ignition-switched.

Your options:

  • Use a hardwired tracker instead if you need continuous monitoring while parked.
  • Accept that the OBD device will only be online when the vehicle is running and adjust your expectations for parked monitoring.
  • Some OBD trackers have a small internal battery that maintains operation for a short period after power loss.

Loose physical connection

An OBD connector that is not fully seated will drop connection when the vehicle hits a bump or the connector is nudged. This produces erratic, intermittent dropouts that do not follow a clear pattern.

Remove the device and reinsert it firmly until you hear or feel it seat properly. The OBD port is typically a 16-pin connector and all pins should be engaged.

If the device is heavy or hanging at an angle due to its orientation, this can put stress on the connector over time. A right-angle adapter or a short OBD extension cable can take the strain off the connection.

Vehicle ECU interference

Some vehicles, particularly those with complex electrical architectures (certain BMWs, Mercedes, and modern hybrid vehicles), actively monitor the OBD bus. When they detect an unfamiliar device communicating on the bus, they can attempt to restrict or interrupt access. This can appear as intermittent disconnection.

This is less common but does occur. Symptoms include the device going offline only on specific vehicle models in a mixed fleet, or the issue starting after a vehicle firmware update.

If you suspect this, try the same device in a different vehicle. If it works without issue elsewhere, the vehicle is the variable.

Sleep mode cutting the data connection

Many OBD trackers have a sleep mode that reduces power consumption when the vehicle is stationary. In sleep mode, the device may cut the mobile data connection while maintaining a GPS fix, or cut both.

When the device wakes, it reconnects and uploads any buffered data. In the platform this looks like the device going offline while parked, which is the intended behaviour.

If you want the device to remain connected even while parked, check whether the sleep mode settings allow for a “light sleep” option that maintains the data connection at reduced polling frequency.

SIM data throttling

On some IoT SIM plans, if a device uses more data than the plan allows in a given period, the SIM is throttled or temporarily suspended. The tracker drops connection and takes hours or days to recover.

Check with your SIM provider whether throttling is in place and what the data limits are. For fleet tracking with reasonable polling intervals, a data allowance of 5 to 20MB per device per month is typically sufficient.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Check whether the OBD port has power with the ignition off. If not, the disconnections when parked are expected.
  2. Remove and firmly reinsert the device. Check for physical wobble.
  3. If the issue is vehicle-specific, test the device in a different vehicle to isolate whether the vehicle ECU is the cause.
  4. Review sleep mode settings. Confirm whether the disconnection pattern aligns with the sleep timer.
  5. Check SIM data usage against plan limits.
  6. If the issue persists, consider switching to a hardwired tracker for that vehicle.
