Mictrack GPS Tracker Offline: What to Check and How to Fix It
Traknova
Mictrack produces a range of compact GPS trackers, with the MT600 and MT700 series being the most commonly deployed in UK fleet and asset tracking applications. Mictrack devices are primarily configured via SMS commands, which introduces some specific failure points compared to devices that use a USB configuration tool. Here is how to diagnose an offline Mictrack device.
Traknova integrates with Mictrack hardware. See the Mictrack integration page for setup guides and configuration commands.
How Mictrack devices are configured
Unlike devices with dedicated Windows-based configuration software, Mictrack devices are configured primarily by sending SMS commands to the SIM card number in the device. This means:
- The SIM must be active with at least SMS capability, even before data is configured.
- Configuration commands must be sent in the correct format with the correct admin password.
- The device must have network registration to receive SMS commands.
If you cannot reach the device via SMS, the SIM may not be active or may not have network coverage.
Most common cause: SMS configuration commands not accepted
If a configuration command is sent and the device does not respond, or responds with an error, there are a few likely reasons:
- Incorrect admin password: Mictrack devices require an admin password for configuration commands. The default password is typically
000000or123456, but if it has been changed and you do not have the current password, you will need to perform a factory reset. - Command format error: the command syntax must be exact. A missing comma, incorrect spacing, or wrong command keyword will be ignored or return an error.
- No network registration: the device cannot receive SMS if it has no network signal. Check whether the device is in an area with mobile coverage.
Check the Mictrack documentation for your specific model to confirm the exact command syntax and default admin password.
APN not configured or incorrect
Mictrack devices shipped from factory often have a blank APN or are configured with an APN for a non-UK network. Without the correct APN, the device cannot establish a mobile data connection.
To set the APN on a Mictrack MT600 or MT700, send the following SMS command to the device:
APN [apn_name] [admin_password]
For SIMs requiring a username and password:
APN [apn_name] [username] [password] [admin_password]
Common UK APN settings:
- EE:
everywhere - Vodafone:
web.vodafone.co.uk - Three:
3internet - O2:
mobile.o2.co.uk
After sending the APN command, the device should acknowledge receipt. Wait two to three minutes for the device to restart and attempt a data connection.
SIM data plan not active
A SIM in a Mictrack device may be receiving SMS (so configuration commands work) but have no active data plan. In this case, the device will register on the voice and SMS network but will not be able to send GPS data to the platform.
Confirm with your SIM provider that:
- The SIM has an active data plan.
- The data plan has not expired or hit a usage limit.
- The SIM has not been suspended.
You can test whether the issue is data specifically by checking whether SMS configuration commands are working (if they are, the SIM and network are functioning) while the device still appears offline in the platform (indicating a data issue).
Server address not configured
Mictrack devices need to be configured with the Traknova server address and port to send data to the platform. To set the server address, send the command:
SERVER [ip_address] [port] [admin_password]
The Mictrack integration page provides the correct IP address and port for Traknova.
If the device was previously configured for another platform, the old server address will still be in place and will need to be updated.
Factory reset procedure
If you cannot get configuration commands to work and suspect the admin password has been changed, a factory reset will restore the device to default settings. The factory reset procedure varies by model but typically involves holding a reset button for a set period or sending a reset command via SMS using the manufacturer’s master password.
Contact Mictrack or refer to the device documentation for the factory reset procedure for your specific model. Note that a factory reset will clear all configuration including the server address, APN, and any custom settings.
Step-by-step fix sequence
- Confirm the SIM is active with SMS capability by sending a test command to the device.
- Confirm the admin password is correct. Try the default (
000000or123456). - Send the APN configuration command with the correct APN for your SIM.
- Send the SERVER configuration command with the Traknova IP and port.
- Confirm with your SIM provider that data is active.
- Wait three to five minutes and check the Traknova platform for incoming data from the IMEI.
- If commands are not being accepted, check network coverage in the device location and consider a factory reset if the password is unknown.
Mictrack integration with Traknova
Traknova’s GPS tracking platform integrates with Mictrack MT600 and MT700 series devices. See the Mictrack integration page for the full list of configuration commands and Traknova server settings.
If the device remains offline after these steps, book a demo or contact Traknova support with the device IMEI and model number.
