Hardwired GPS Tracker Not Working After Installation

Traknova

A freshly fitted tracker that does not appear in the platform is one of the more common post-install issues. In most cases it is a wiring error, a SIM problem, or a configuration step that was skipped. Here is what to check before calling the fitter back.

Confirm the device has power

Start at the beginning. If there is no power, nothing else matters.

Check the following:

  • Is the inline fuse on the power wire intact? A blown fuse is common when the power wire is connected to a circuit that spikes on startup.
  • Is there voltage at the power terminal when measured with a multimeter? For most vehicle trackers, this should be around 12V DC.
  • Is the ground wire making solid contact with a clean metal surface? A poor ground is responsible for a significant proportion of hardwired tracker faults. Paint, rust, or a loose connection will prevent the device from powering on reliably.

Some devices have a small LED indicator that confirms power. Check your device documentation for the LED behaviour on power-up.

Constant power vs ignition-switched power

Most fleet GPS trackers need to be wired to a constant 12V supply, meaning a circuit that remains live even when the ignition is off. This allows the device to report vehicle location while parked and to detect theft.

A common installation error is wiring the tracker to an ignition-switched circuit instead. The device appears to work fine when the ignition is on, but powers off completely when the vehicle is turned off and may show as offline or intermittently connected in the platform.

Check which circuit the power wire is connected to by measuring voltage with the ignition off. If the voltage drops to zero, the device is on an ignition-switched circuit.

The decision to use constant vs ignition-switched power should match the device configuration. Some devices are designed to operate on ignition-switched power and manage battery protection themselves. Check the installation guide for your specific hardware.

SIM card not activated or APN not configured

Even if the device has power and a GPS fix, it cannot communicate with the platform without a working data connection.

Before the device is installed, the SIM card should be:

  • Physically inserted into the correct slot with the correct orientation.
  • Activated on a data plan with the correct APN.
  • Tested with a data session to confirm connectivity.

If the SIM was supplied by Traknova, it will already be activated. If you are supplying your own SIM, check with the provider that it is on a data plan and that the APN is configured.

Common APN settings for UK networks:

  • EE: everywhere
  • Vodafone: web.vodafone.co.uk
  • Three: 3internet
  • O2: mobile.o2.co.uk

Server endpoint not configured

The device needs to know where to send data. This is configured as a server IP address and port number in the device settings. If the installer has not updated these from factory defaults, the data is going nowhere.

Confirm that the server address in the device configuration matches the settings provided by Traknova’s GPS tracking platform. If the device was previously used on another platform, the old server address will still be in place after a reinstall unless it was explicitly updated.

Device not registered on the platform

Even if the device is online and sending data, it will not appear in the platform unless its IMEI has been registered and associated with a vehicle record.

Check the following:

  • Is the device IMEI added to the Traknova platform?
  • Is the IMEI associated with the correct vehicle?
  • Was the correct IMEI recorded during installation? IMEIs are 15 digits and a transposition error is easy to make.

The IMEI is usually printed on a label on the device and can also be retrieved via the device configuration tool or an SMS command.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Confirm the device has power: check the fuse, measure voltage at the power terminal, check the ground connection.
  2. Confirm whether the device is on constant or ignition-switched power and whether that matches the configuration requirement.
  3. Check the SIM is active and the APN is correct.
  4. Verify the server endpoint in device configuration.
  5. Confirm the IMEI is registered on the platform and linked to the correct vehicle.
  6. Check the device LED behaviour to see what state the device is reporting.
