GPS Tracker Not Updating Location? Here's What to Fix First
Traknova
A tracker that stops updating is one of the most frustrating faults in fleet management. The vehicle is out there, but the platform shows it parked somewhere from three hours ago. Here is what causes it and how to work through it quickly.
Check whether the device is actually online first
Before assuming a GPS problem, confirm whether the device is communicating with the platform at all. If the device shows as offline, the location update issue is secondary. Fix the connection first.
If the device shows as online but the position is stale, that points to a GPS signal problem rather than a data problem.
Most common cause: the device has lost GPS signal
GPS signal requires a clear view of the sky. A tracker parked in an underground car park, inside a building, or in a dense urban area with tall buildings will lose its satellite fix and stop updating.
What to check:
- Was the vehicle last seen in a location where GPS signal would be poor (covered car parks, tunnels, warehouse bays)?
- Has the vehicle moved since the last update? If not, the last position may simply be correct.
- Is the antenna properly connected and positioned with a clear view upward?
When a device has been stationary with no GPS fix for a long period, it will need a few minutes to reacquire satellites once it moves back into the open. This is called a cold start.
SIM card or data issue
If the device has a GPS fix but is not pushing updates to the platform, the data connection is usually the culprit.
Check the following:
- Is the SIM card active and on a data plan?
- Has the SIM data allowance run out for the month?
- Is the APN setting on the device correct for the SIM provider?
Many trackers log data locally when offline and batch-send it once reconnected. If you suddenly see a burst of historical positions, the device was logging without data.
Server endpoint misconfigured
Some trackers are configured to send data to a specific IP address and port. If that endpoint has changed, or was set incorrectly during installation, data stops arriving at the platform even if the device is online and the SIM is working.
This is more common after a device is transferred from one platform to another, or after firmware is reset to factory defaults. Check the device configuration and confirm the server address matches what the Traknova GPS tracking platform expects.
Polling interval set too low
If the device is updating but positions look stale or infrequent, the report interval may be configured to send data every 10 or 30 minutes rather than every 30 seconds or one minute. This is not a fault but a configuration choice. For live fleet tracking, a 30-second to two-minute interval is typical.
Increasing the reporting frequency will increase data usage, so check that the SIM plan supports the higher volume.
Device in sleep or power-saving mode
Many GPS trackers enter a low-power sleep state when a vehicle is parked for an extended period. This is intentional behaviour to protect the vehicle battery. The device wakes when motion is detected.
If a vehicle has been parked for days and shows no updates, sleep mode is the likely explanation. The position shown is usually the last known location before sleep, which should be where the vehicle is parked.
If the device is not waking on motion, check the motion detection sensitivity settings in the device configuration.
Step-by-step fix sequence
- Check platform status: is the device online or offline?
- If offline, diagnose the data and SIM connection before anything else.
- If online but stale, check when the vehicle last moved and where it was parked.
- Confirm GPS signal quality at the last known location.
- Review the report interval in device configuration.
- Check whether sleep mode is active and whether the wakeup trigger is set correctly.
- Verify the server endpoint is correct.

If you have worked through these steps and the tracker is still not updating, the issue is likely a hardware fault or a configuration error that needs hands-on access to the device.
