GPS Tracker Not Showing on Map in Fleet Software

Traknova

A device that shows as online in the platform but does not appear on the map is a different problem from a device that is offline. The data connection is working, but for one reason or another the vehicle is not rendering as a position on the map. Here is how to diagnose it.

Most common cause: no GPS fix yet

If the device has just powered on, or has been indoors or underground, it may not yet have a satellite fix. Without a fix, the device has no valid coordinates to send. The platform shows it as online but cannot plot it on the map because there is no location data to plot.

This resolves itself once the vehicle moves into an area with clear sky visibility. Allow two to five minutes for the device to acquire a solid GPS fix from a cold start.

If the vehicle has been outdoors for some time and there is still no map position, check whether the GPS antenna is correctly connected and positioned.

Vehicle record not linked to the device IMEI

In most fleet platforms, map positions appear against a vehicle record, not just a raw device. If a new device has been installed but its IMEI has not been linked to a vehicle record in the platform, data will arrive from the device but it will not associate with any vehicle and will not appear on the map.

Check the following in the Traknova platform:

  • Is the device IMEI registered?
  • Is the IMEI linked to the correct vehicle record?
  • Is the vehicle record set to active?

This is the most common cause when a newly installed device sends data (you can see it in the raw data log) but does not appear on the map.

Coordinates arriving in the wrong format

GPS coordinates can be expressed in different formats. The most common is decimal degrees (e.g. 51.5074, -0.1278 for London). Some older device protocols send coordinates in degrees, minutes, and decimal minutes format, which needs to be converted before display.

If coordinates are sent in an unexpected format and the platform does not convert them correctly, the position will either not plot at all, or plot in a completely wrong location (often in the ocean or in Africa, where 0,0 coordinates land).

This is less common with well-supported hardware but can occur when integrating a new or unusual device type. Contact Traknova support if you suspect a coordinate format issue.

Timezone or timestamp issue

Some platforms filter out positions that appear to have arrived in the wrong time sequence, such as a position with a timestamp from the future or far in the past. If the device clock is incorrect and the timestamp is significantly wrong, positions may be discarded or not displayed.

This can happen after a device firmware reset, or if the device has not yet synced its clock to GPS time. Most devices sync their clock automatically once they have a GPS fix. Check the device time setting in the configuration if the issue persists.

Map view filtered to exclude the vehicle

Double-check the straightforward things. Fleet map views often include filters by vehicle group, driver, or status.

  • Is the vehicle in a group that is currently hidden in the map filter?
  • Is the map zoomed into an area that does not include the vehicle’s location?
  • Is the vehicle marked as inactive in the platform?

Try zooming out to a full UK or global view, clearing all filters, and looking for the vehicle again.

Step-by-step fix sequence

  1. Check whether the device is online and receiving a GPS fix. If no fix, wait for the vehicle to move outside.
  2. Confirm the device IMEI is linked to an active vehicle record in the platform.
  3. Check map filters: groups, status, date range.
  4. Zoom out to a full map view and search for the vehicle by name.
  5. If data is arriving but not plotting, check whether coordinates look valid (latitude between -90 and 90, longitude between -180 and 180).
  6. Check the device timestamp for accuracy.

Traknova platform

Traknova’s GPS tracking platform provides a clear vehicle registration and IMEI linking flow to reduce onboarding errors. Device status, GPS fix quality, and raw data logs are all accessible without needing to contact support.
